Link building guide

Search engine marketing and especially search engine optimisation is mostly about links. After Google’s Jagger and BigDaddy ranking algorithm updates, webmasters have to be more careful than ever about the “integrity” of their backlink campaign. There’s an excellent review by Jim Westergren on how to go about any link building campaign. The main points are listed here. Integrity in a backlink campaign means that any link growth should appear as natural as possible to avoid a possible penalty in Google for search engine spamming. To make an SEO link campaign appear natural you should ensure:
  • Use mixed anchor text – even to the point of having the occasional “click here” backlink.
  • Mixed types of links ie directories, reciprocals, forum signatures, paid high PR links etc.
  • Paid links shouldn’t be placed near phrases such as “advertisers” or “sponsors”
  • Links should point to different pages. Don’t just get links for your homepage.
  • Links should be permanent because of Google’s probable aging filter on links.
  • Links should be acquired steadily; avoid spikes in link growth.
You could argue that many of the above ideas about natural link building are common sense, but we would recommend you read this summary and read the original article for the details here. Found via Seo Scoop.
